With the UK currently receiving record temperatures of, in places, over 40 degrees, the MET office has issued warnings and drivers are being urged to ensure they are prepared for the heat before commencing a journey. With these high temperature come an increased risk not only to vehicle passengers but to the vehicles themselves. With high temperatures come an increased chance of vehicle breakdown, so to help here are a few tips to keep your cool during the heatwave.
Vehicle Checks
Although predominantly reliable, vehicles are put under additional strain during adverse heat. It is a good idea to make some additional checks on your vehicle before setting off on a journey.
Be sure your vehicle is up to date with its servicing and check fluid levels. Pay particular attention to your vehicles coolant level and screenwash. Low coolant levels are far more likely to cause issues in the heat, whilst screenwash isn’t critical to the vehicle not suffering a breakdown, it is critical for good visibility in all weathers. Bright sunshine can make it impossible to see though a dirty windscreen.
Tyre pressures should be carefully checked as the additional heat puts further stress upon these safety critical components. Check the condition of tyres carefully too, they should have a minimum of 1.6mm of tread and have no bulges or deformitys.
Although not all cars are fitted with air conditioning, if yours is it is worth checking it is operating correctly before setting off.
Timescale
Don’t plan your journey to coincide with the hottest parts of the day, if possible try and either complete your journey in the early morning or later in the day when the temperatures have subsided. Take the time to open the windows of your car before setting off and air the vehicle to reduce any build up of heat within it.
Be prepaired
Pack a few essentials to take with you, obviously starting with plenty of water to drink. Some suitable snacks that wont melt are always going to be appreciated by passengers. Take a mobile phone charger with you as a phone is now an essential piece of equipment to keep you safe and in communication with assistance should you suffer a breakdown enroute. Sunglasses and sunscreen cream are defiantly to be advised as in the configs of a car bring sunshine can quickly burn your skin and having sunglasses available can make a big difference to how well you can observe the road and other traffic. Long sleeved clothing is also advised as it can provide much needed protection from the sun on these exceptionally hot days.
Take A Break
Make sure you take regular breaks, this is especially important in the heat. Try and park in the shade, or use a windscreen shield to reduce the buildup of heat in your car. Take the opportunity to have a drink as the inside of a car can be a very dehydrating environment.
Pets and Kids
Never leave your pets or or kids in a car on a hot day. The temperature in a parked car can increase very quickly to unbearable levels. This can be life-threatening for both children and pets. Even on the move a constant check on your passenger’s wellbeing is very important and with the extreme heat situations can change fast.
