Is Sixth Form the Right Choice for My Child? Children have a few options when they reach the end of school. They can carry on with their studies and go on to either college, or sixth form. While both are brilliant places for children to study and offer similar course options, there are slight differences, such as the experience that they are able to take away. Here are some points that a top independent sixth form college recommend children consider when applying.
Comfort and Familiarity
Sixth form is the last two years of school, and form years 12 and 13. They are usually an extension of secondary school, although there are others that exist entirely separate called “sixth form colleges”. For those that lead on from year 11, children have the benefit of comfort and familiarity as they are already accustomed to teaching staff and their school environment. This makes for an easier transition and can make entering this new step less daunting.
Relationships
To follow on from the point above, children will already likely have some good friendships and teacher relationships from the beginning which can make for a better overall experience.
Making New Friends and Professional Connections
On the other hand, college is great because children can experience what it’s like to start something new and step out of their comfort zone. They will be able to make new friends, broaden their circle and meet new lecturers with a wide variety of qualifications amongst them.
Motivating Environment
The new environment can also be a motivator for children as they are surrounded by a those on the same journey, which can help them to develop the right mindset and work towards their goals.
Preparation for University
Colleges and sixth form colleges give children a feel for what university will be like and they can learn to be more independent.
The decision will ultimately come down to your child and which they prefer depending on their needs. We highly recommend making use of open days and taster days as they let them get a feel of the atmosphere and environment they will be going to.
