Exploring Moral Values with Your Child – One of the most important lessons that any parent has to teach is the difference between right and wrong, and good moral values. Lying can cause more harm than good, even if it appears to be the kinder thing to do. Why your child should be mindful of saying anything out of turn, you should explore why honesty is the best policy.
Moral Values – Resilience
As your child goes through life, things won’t always go to plan so they will need to be resilient and get back up. There’s no particular way to teach this other than embodying the message yourself, giving your child ample opportunity to practise and encouragement. Over time they will learn to believe in themselves and become less afraid of the challenges that come their way. It’s equally important for children to recognise their limits an understand where they need help as this can also be counterproductive.
Moral Values – Compassion
Another moral value to work on is compassion. We all want to be treated with kindness and humility and it is a valuable social skill for children to have. To help them work on this, get your child in the habit of putting themselves in other’s shoes.
Moral Values – Respect
We all deserve to be treated with basic respect, irrespective of our beliefs and backgrounds. Its common courtesy and expected of all. To help them with this, practice manners inside and outside of the home, talk about the things that are inappropriate to say/do and work on their compassion.
These are just the most important moral values to name. To help your child develop them, as a parent you must embody them in your own actions as your child will look up to you and it will avoid sending mixed messages.
