Positively looking after your mental health is something none of us should ignore. A little and often approach can help us keep our mental health is the best possible shape and is much better than leaving it to chance. Here are five ways to look after your mental health.

Lead An Active Lifestyle

Being active is very important for mental health. It keeps us fit mentally and physically. Taking time specifically for exercise is good for more than just the exercise it provides. Timing exercise correctly can help you shape your week into a time that flows naturally between activities. Choosing to add exercise to your daily routine can help keep us mentally in great shape. Rather than taking the car, a walk to the shops gives time to reflect and enjoy some peace. Mental stimulation and exercise for our minds is just as important as physical exercise is for our bodies. How each of us stimulates and exercises our minds differs greatly. Some activities have been shown to universally benefit us. Reading is one of them that is easy to do in many situations. It’s a convenient way to relax and destress. Choosing to go for a walk or read a book in your afternoon break at work may help you clear your mind and focus more than the usual coffee break. You might not be able to travel the world for a break, but taking some time out of your day to relax is definitely recommended.

Eat Healthy Foods

Eating well and good mental health are closely associated. The makeup of our diet needs to contain all the Vitamins, nutrients and minerals we need to function. But more so eating fresh produce, especially vegetables helps our bodies feel good and energised. Some foods have been given superfood status when looked at from the view of keeping mentally healthy. Kale Cabbage and Watercress amongst other dark leafy vegetables are most beneficial. Along with oily fish and foods high in Omega 3  will provide a specific boost to mental wellbeing and are great to include in your diet. Eating food you enjoy is just as important as its nutritional content. So have fun with food and try to eat foods that taste good to you and make you smile. Drinking plenty of water has great benefits for mental health. Being dehydrated affects the thinking process and can lead to more serious long term effects. Drinking often is really important and you should always have water on hand.

Talk To Others

Sharing your feelings and talking through issues with others is really important for mental wellbeing. Life can be very complicated and sometimes confusing. Having people you can talk to about specific issues and more general trends of thought can give balance and reassurance where it’s needed most. Understanding your thoughts and feelings is key to reducing anxiety and stress. Talking with your friends can be great and provide much of what you need to help navigate life’s trials, but a mental health services professional can often implement help easily and quickly if you feel your mental health is being negatively affected..

Rest And Sleep

Having the right amount of rest and sleep will bring rewards with your mental well-being. Each person is going to be different in their requirements for rest and sleep but the effects of not getting that required amount are always the same. A lack of sleep over the short and longer-term can lead to a deteriorating thought process and losing positivity in your thinking. Being well-rested and able to function at your best are intrinsically linked so for the best in mental wellness take time to sleep and rest well.

Accept Help

Accepting help when you need it is important to maintain mental health. As we make our decisions with our minds and it is our minds that can be affected by mental health issues. You can see how important it is to be open with yourself and seek and accept help to effect a recovery. Sometimes it is hard to know when you need to look towards help. Speaking with a councillor or other mental health professional is a great place to start, their knowledge, skills and experience are the best way to assess where help can be given and how best to achieve it.
