Helping Your Child with their Homework – Making Sure That They Get It Done
Homework adds an additional layer of responsibility and as your child moves up through school, their workload will likely increase. To make sure that it’s all complete they will need to manage their time effectively. You can help with this by implementing a good study routine. In theory this sounds simple but can be quite challenging. What we find works is having a good balance. Ensure that study time is broken down into manageable chunks and that they have plenty of breaks to keep them energised and motivated.
Helping Your Child with their Homework – Sit and Explain
Studying at home and at school are two very different things. In the classroom your child has the support of their teacher should they get stuck, whereas at home they are left to it. While it’s the premise of the task, it’s important that your child knows what they’re doing so that they’re not just sitting there stuck and can give their homework a go. To support your child whilst still making sure that they complete their homework independently, you can explain questions and concepts they don’t quite understand.
It may even help to go through a few examples until they’re confident at what they’re doing.
Helping Your Child with their Homework – Implement a Reward System
After a full week of school, it’s understandable that your child will have other things that they want to do. If motivation is something that you’re struggling with, try implementing a reward system to incentivise your child. This could be whatever you see fit but you will need to keep a log of it.

You may also find that removing distractions helps. Of course, if they have a tablet right in front of them, temptation will be there and there’s a higher chance of your child procrastinating. Removing all distractions and creating a neutral study zone may be able to help.
