Whether you’re already working a remote job or it is something that you’re interested in, one of the things that lots of people struggle with is how to be productive when working from home. Although working from home is the dream for many, it comes with plenty of distractions which means if you’re not careful you’ll spend your working day watching Netflix, and that is not something any boss is likely to want to put up for long term.
Get Into The Right Mindset
The biggest way to stay productive is to make sure you are in the right mindset. Treat each day as exactly what it is – a working day. If you slack on feeling as though you’re at work then this is likely to reflect in the amount of work you and the quality of work you put out. Remind yourself that although you’re at home you are in work time, and as such it needs to be treated in the right way.
Remind Yourself of The Positives
Working from home is something that not every job allows you to do, so it’s important to remind yourself that you are in a lucky position if you have bagged a position that you can work remotely. Remember the positives:
- Better work/life balance
- No long commute to work
- The chance to work more flexible hours
- Your own dress code
- Home comforts
- No need to share the kitchen with work colleagues

Allow The Rest of Your Life To Be As Productive
Although it is important to be in the right mindset for a working day at home, being at home all day is the perfect way to help get everything else in your life straightened out too. For example, you can probably nip and put a load of washing on, or hang it out on a sunny day. You shouldn’t take advantage of this but being able to do small jobs around the house while you’re there and working means that you’ll be happier in the long run, which we all know helps work productivity anyway!
Set Yourself Up For a Good Working Day
Although you’re working from home, that doesn’t mean you should let everything slide. For example, there might not be a strict dress-code but that doesn’t mean you should work in your pjyamas every day. Try to get up every day with plenty of time to have some breakfast and wake up before you need to work. Getting up at 8:55 for a 9am start might seem tempting, but it isn’t going to help you be at the top of your game.
